Born in Hyderabad on 9 September 1941, Abid Ali was a proud son of the city who rose to prominence as a key member of the Indian cricket team during the 1960s and 1970s. A versatile all-rounder, he played 29 Test matches and 5 One-Day Internationals for India, contributing significantly with both bat and ball. His memorable debut in 1969 against Australia, where he showcased his fearless approach, remains etched in cricketing history. Abid Ali was also a vital part of India’s historic Test series victories in England and the West Indies in 1971 under Ajit Wadekar’s captaincy.

Beyond his international exploits, Abid Ali was a cornerstone of Hyderabad cricket, representing the state with distinction in the Ranji Trophy and nurturing countless young talents. His quick medium-pace bowling, gritty batting, and astute cricketing mind made him a fan favourite and a respected figure in the cricketing fraternity.

Abid Ali’s journey may have concluded, but his spirit will forever remain a guiding light for Hyderabad and Indian cricket.
